Finding a job after a long period of unemployment can be challenging. For Miles Kidder, a 28-year-old physics graduate from Indiana University, it felt almost impossible. But with the help of WorkOne Northern Indiana, Miles's story turned from struggle to success.

Miles Kidder’s Story

Miles had been jobless for over a year and was feeling very discouraged. On his father’s advice, he decided to try WorkOne Northern Indiana. Initially skeptical about a government agency's effectiveness, he was surprised by the supportive and helpful staff.

"I was very discouraged. I did not have high expectations for a government agency and my first day was my longest. I sat waiting to see someone for what felt like several hours, but I was committed to making this work and stayed."

After a few visits, Miles was paired with Daryanne Carr, a career advisor who became his greatest supporter.

Daryanne started working with Miles in March 2024. She helped him rebuild his resume and taught him essential job-search skills. Her support went beyond professional advice; she also boosted his confidence.

"I began by building his resume into my state-approved format. I then began seeing him weekly for other skills building from applying efficiently with your resume, making successful follow-up calls, to interviewing tips."

Daryanne provided continuous encouragement, helping Miles believe in his abilities and potential.

"He quickly learned the skills and applied them, often reviewing his interviews with me- ever changing his approach to avoid self-inflicted undermining. This growth and his commitment to working hard accumulated to his landing a job at Exemplary Foam, within his desired title of engineer, as Drafting Engineer."

Miles’s success was celebrated at WorkOne when he rang the bell to mark his new beginning on June 10th, 2024.
